With the success of World of Warcraft, videogame publishers have been looking for new virtual worlds to offer to videogame players. Next week, there’s a new option with the release of Star Trek Online. Developed by Cryptic Studios, the game will allow fans be the head of their own starship as they travel the universe and battle rival ships and seek out new civilizations. Zachary Quinto, whose role as Spock in J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” movie received a shout-out during this week’s iPad presentation, serves as one of the voices in the game. Deadline Hollywood – Since he dropped out of Harvey, Steven Spielberg’s first project under the reconstituted DreamWorks has been a subject of much speculation. Now I hear who’s at the center of the director’s biopic of George Gershwin, which DreamWorks acquired last fall. It’s Zachary Quinto — Sylar in the NBC drama-fantasy Heroes, and Spock in the JJ Abrams-directed megapic Star Trek. Quinto will play the famed composer and pianist, who with brother Ira was responsible for more than a dozen Broadway shows before dying at 38. DreamWorks is even supplying accent and dialogue coaches for Quinto, and shooting could begin as soon as April. Doug Wright wrote the script, and Marc Platt and singer/pianist Michael Feinstein are producing. A DreamWorks insider says this is one of 3 projects Spielberg is looking at for his next piccause he’s anxious to get back to work. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s an announcement later this week.

i have been inundated with questions and confusion about a comment i made during an interview with wired – about the new atari star trek online game – in which i said i am stepping away from trek for the next two years. obviously i will be a part of any upcoming films… reprising my role as spock. what i meant was that in the meantime i won’t be making any public appearances related to the franchise – or doing any more auxiliary projects pertaining to the trek universe. i will be focusing my efforts on other projects and preparing to shoot the next film – which will be released in june of 2012… two years from now. hence the no trek for two years remark. worry not trekkers. it was a misunderstanding of context. i am not spock. but i am spock. all at the same time.

I don’t know how people was able to misunderstood his interview, but, well…

“I’m stepping away from Star Trek for at least two years — no movies, no conventions, no anything for a while,” Quinto told Wired.com in a telephone interview. His planned absence from geekdom was a major motivation for doing the new game. “I did this game to make an investment in the fan base,” the actor said.

Quinto doesn’t play Spock in the forthcoming game, but rather provides the voice for a holographic doctor — the Emergency Medical Hologram Mark VI. New players of the MMO will hear Quinto’s voice as they make their way through the game’s opening tutorial. Quinto himself played the game’s opening and found his own voice instructive.

“I did exactly what I told myself to do and I survived,” he said. “I passed the mission with flying colors.”
