Oct20| Zachary Quinto getting in Spock shape for ‘Star Trek’ sequel

It’s been a busy week for a certain young Vulcan. Zachary Quinto’s first effort as a producer, the Wall Street thriller “Margin Call,” in which he also stars, hits theaters on Friday. On the eve of the film’s New York premiere, Quinto acknowledged publicly that he’s gay for the first time. In our interview in Thursday’s newspaper, Quinto talks about the meaning of this moment to him, on a personal and professional level.

Quinto’s “Margin Call” role shares a lot in common with Spock — he plays a brainy young investment bank analyst. In November, Quinto said he’ll turn to a very different kind of challenge — readying for a major Spock action scene in J.J. Abrams’ long-awaited “Star Trek” sequel, which starts production in January.

“There’s a big sequence for me that I have to prepare for in this movie physically so I’m training, working on getting in some serious shape, building my cardio endurance, preparing to run a lot,” Quinto said. (more…)

Oct20| Missing photo shoots added

I had a bunch of photo shoots settled here on my computer waiting to be added, mostly done in 2011 to promote Margin Call. They aren’t new to you, probably, but are new to our site:

Oct20| Zachary Quinto rides a wave of professional, personal growth

Actor-producer Zachary Quinto is in firm control of his world, with ‘Margin Call,’ his production company Before the Door’s first feature, set to premiere.

In late 2008, “Margin Call” looked like the kind of film project that could languish indefinitely: an unfinanced script from a first-time writer-director on a wonkish subject — the math behind Wall Street’s recent collapse.

Then Spock beamed in.

Zachary Quinto had just wrapped filming on J.J. Abrams’ reboot of “Star Trek,” playing the pointy-eared young Starfleet Academy commander, and his NBC show “Heroes” had a cult following. He had formed a production company with two drama school friends and was looking for projects, so he met “Margin Call” writer-director J.C. Chandor at the Fairfax Farmers Market on the recommendation of a mutual friend. (more…)

Oct19| A minute with Zachary Quinto and his Margin Call

(Reuters) – Zachary Quinto, who made headlines this week when he said he was gay, is best known for playing Spock in the 2009′s “Star Trek” and for his role as the evil Sylar on the recent TV series “Heroes.”

The 34-year old actor has leveraged his fame to start his own production company, Before the Door Pictures, whose first film, “Margin Call” opens in theaters on Friday.

The film, in which Quinto also stars, boasts an all-star cast including Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons, Stanley Tucci and Demi Moore among many others. It takes place in an investment bank over a 24-hour period at the start of the 2008 financial crisis. Oct19| Details: Zachary Quinto (and Noah) Q&A

The 34-year-old actor best known as Spock in Star Trek has been noticing a lot of things lately—from tabloid excess to financial corruption—that he finds highly illogical.
Interview by David Walters, Photograph by Chris Mcpherson

Details: In your new movie, Margin Call, you play an investment-bank risk analyst during the 2008 financial collapse. You’re a little more smoldering than the average bean counter.
Zachary Quinto: Our director, J.C. Chandor, brought that up once. He said, “I just wish we could shave your head. You’d look a little less put-together.” The funny thing is, a month and a half after we wrapped, I did shave my head for a play. J.C. said, “That’s the way you should have looked in the movie!” [Laughs.] I’m sure there are dudes on the floors of Wall Street who look like me.

Details: Were you concerned about whether you could inspire empathy for a bunch of overpaid suits?
Zachary Quinto: We’re not necessarily asking for empathy, just providing access to a world in which these people were ultimately pawns in a much larger game. There were certainly people who acted reprehensibly, but there were also people who were just following orders.

Details: What can you tell us about your role in Ryan Murphy’s new TV drama, American Horror Story?
Zachary Quinto: I think at this point I can safely say I’m playing a ghost. But they were very strict with the scripts. I had to go to the studio on my first day at seven in the morning and watch the pilot alone in the editing bay. I was so freaked out. I was in this dark room breathing that stagnant non-circulated air . . . It totally put me in the right frame of mind. (more…)
